i must correct said x number of days/weeks ago. 11.10 isn't slow pig......***gnome/unity*** slow pig! tried lxde 11.10 , system runs quickly. so....do downgrade gnome older version came 11.04 then? how? better yet, how uninstall gnome/unity without leaving orphaned pieces behind? suppose can ignore it. having on drive doesn't slow down system i'd guess. can compiz installed , hooked lxde? how dat? loves me rotating cube! haha i don't know lxde, know works xfce4. have go if like. there's gnome-fallback if old look. luck! i had 8 gb sandisk cruzer usb drive ubuntu 11.04 installed , since have 16 gb ubuntu 11.04 , 16 gb 11.10, thought i'd use usb drive ntfs data drive. i've formated usb drive both gparted , "disk utility" ntfs format , in both cases newly formatted drive read-only. if boot windows 7, usb drive writable other usb drives i've not formated ubuntu utilities writable in ubuntu. i've seen information terminal commands make writable, feel must overlooking basic. i've searched internet , found many same issue, no solutions other terminal commands. might try format windows, seems should able format writable usb drive ubuntu, ideas? thanks. i think buntu level higher mine dave, did quick search. http://sathyasays.com/2007/06/13/for...sing-terminal/ helpful? hi, have been running on 11.10 no problems. have not downloaded virus. last few programs installed were: hibernate kate (text editor) qshutdown a failure @ installing teamspeak3 last night, uploading video youtube , getting late. told dad not turn off modem or else internet. left laptop turned on (low power settings - low brightness) , plugged in. opened qshutdown , set shut down computer in 3 hours - when video should done. woke in morning , checked laptop, off flashing light indicated plugged in , recieving power. did not turn computer on until later. when turned computer on left booting up. came 20 minutes later find still booting. had made purple ubuntu screen lights turning on , off. (the 4 dots beloq ubuntu text.) computer takes 26 seconds boot ubuntu. not think next pulled out power cord , tried again (my laptop's battery not work turns off power). time exact same thing happened , pulled out cord after 60 seconds. next time tried boot comput...
