Thread: Cursor started drifting like an airhockey puck; Unity 3d problem, too

i upgraded 11.10 on weekend 11.04. seemed ok, got adventurous. googling led me conclude add multitouch gestures easily, apt-got xserver-xorg-input-multitouch , xserver-xorg-input-mutouch packages. think latter required strange ppa added (xorg-edgers or something).

installed it, didn't multitouch working---but else kept working, didn't want press luck. ignored it.

after on day passed, tuesday, on start, update center told me should distribution upgrade. apparently, needed partial upgrade. saw 173 packages installed, , 1 xserver package removed not replaced, hesitated. posted message on @ ubuntu.stackexchange whether wise upgrade or not given seemed working, didn't see reply. also, kept bugging me every day, assumed important. upgraded. caused problem. no icons on desktop, no menu, no sidebar. , cursor couldn't "curse" (though did). precise movements, floated , made hard select anything, such links.

rebooted unity 2d, , seem have menus , icons back. 3d still doesn't work (various compiz irregularities), , cursor still floats. float begins happen @ login screen, cursor available.

booting unity 3d, menu , titlebars came back, shift/fade, etc. 3d effects slow usable. 1 example, still have cairo-dock on system before using unity, , enlarge/shrink effects freeze system.

assume of related, somehow, xserver stuff , recent upgrade---which makes me feel this:

(also, float behavior has weird characteristic may helpful in diagnosis---it's if touchpad input being duplicated, once lag, position cursor. don't notice except small movements.)

i'm wondering if can me begin diagnosis. hesitant reinstall completely, looks precise surgery figure out couple of lines in piles of settings contributing these symptoms...

update 1:

screenshots apparently stopped working, too? know these working before upgrade, now, takes picture of black screen cursor visible.
weird combination of problems!

update 2:
cursor moves in direction last moving in long finger on touchpad. no movement, continue drift in same direction forever long finger remains in contact touchpad.

update 3:
in addition being unable take screenshots, unable view png files. maybe file association problem? don't know. please me restore functional configuration had days ago!!

i posted reply consolidated above.

anyway, problems above still exist.
