Thread: How much space shold I give to root paritition

hi,

hard disk 80 gb , have 3 os installed per image attached thread. have been installed in same order described below. triple-booting without problem of now.

1. windows xp professional (ntfs, 16 gb)
2. fedora 14 (lvm, 27 gb)
3. ubuntu 10.10 (extended partition, 37 gb)

windows here not going need store data etc. need learn both fedora 14 , ubuntu 10.10 installing various programs on them root user. user of pc nothing worry other users. have installed programs root in fedora , since have kept root partition 5 gb (and /home partition 20 gb) getting error showing space problem, low disk space. think made mistake when installing fedora thinking programs installed saved in /home directory. have made same mistake when installing ubuntu giving 5 gb root , 30 gb /home partition. in short, have given little space (5 gb only) /root partition , more space /home partition when installing both fedora , ubuntu. downloading latest fedora 16 , ubuntu 11.10 , love keep /root partition of such size in both os (fedora 16 , ubuntu 11.10) can install various programs root (in both os) , learn them. thinking right should give more space /root partition next time? right if install programs root going saved in /root partition , not /home partition? please clear doubts , suggest me rough plan how should give each of 3 os next time? lot.

i suggest fire gparted , reduce home partitions 5gb , increase / partition 10gb on both. 10gb plenty /

have boot 1 distro , resize other distro, reboot distro changed partition sizes of , resize alternate distro. or can both @ same time live cd.

10gb should fine / if plan on installing plenty of apps maybe go bit bigger, 12-15gb. i've never gone on 8gb /.

alternatively can clean out package cache free space if don't need packages in cache anymore.
