Thread: Headless 11.10 and Vino

morning all,

i've done lot of searching , there doesn't seem answer particular issue... still, apologies if i've missed something.

so, i've run ubuntu headless , file server , torrent box. various reasons, prefer use vino rather other flavour of vnc. there's been issues running vino headless, have been overcome variety of documented changes xorg.conf. however, after upgrade 11.10, none of these seem work. i'm incredibly frustrated, , appreciate help.

i've got far:

/etc/x11/xorg.conf
code:
section "device" identifier "vnc device" driver "vesa" endsection section "screen" identifier "vnc screen" device "vnc device" monitor "vnc monitor" subsection "display" modes "1024x768" endsubsection endsection section "monitor" identifier "vnc monitor" horizsync 30-70 vertrefresh 50-75 endsection
i've tried variations on this, including vesa tags worked previous box , version of ubuntu.

relevant parts of xorg.0.log

code:
[    11.405] (==) using config file: "/etc/x11/xorg.conf" [    11.405] (==) using system config directory "/usr/share/x11/xorg.conf.d"
code:
[ 11.433] (ii) loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vesa_drv.so [ 11.433] vesa: ignoring device bound kernel driver [ 11.433] (ww) falling old probe method vesa [ 11.433] (ii) unloadmodule: "vesa" [ 11.433] (ii) unloading vesa [ 11.433] (ee) screen(s) found, none have usable configuration. [ 11.433] fatal server error: [ 11.433] no screens found
obviously, no session, vino refuses start.

i'm on 64bit, , running on new hp proliant micro server (which awesome way. ebuyer still doing them dirt cheap £100 cashback hp)

in advance help,

tom

after fiddling bit, i've reinstated gnome classic sessions, , seem starting ok. however, starting vino-server still gives...

"cannot open display:"

more generic problem vino?

thanks,

tom
