Thread: Japanese characters showing as if they were Chinese

i have installed support both chinese , japanese on ubuntu 11.10 (at least according list in system settings > language support > install/remove languages). problem when view japanese text either in web browser or local application (like anki), seems system thinks it's (traditional, not simplified) chinese text. or actually, seems displaying characters in chinese style seems have priority on japanese style. if there no similar chinese character given japanese character, japanese 1 displayed, in other case seems chinese 1 displayed. in many cases similar, it's quite disturbing , increases risk of mixing them up. won't writing tests @ university...

way, girlfriend happens chinese, think have given correct information although don't speak chinese.

i bet there @ least few other people here speaking or studying japanese. have never thought of this? don't think problem specific computer...
