Thread: nVidia non-free driver -- no signal
i upgraded sony vaio vgc-rb40 running ubuntu 10.04 nvidia quadro nvs 295 pcie card. once installed display came , looked nice , crisp. foobilliard ran slowly. realized had not checked see if nvidia driver in use. of course, since hadn't installed one, wasn't in use. clicked on system > administration > hardware drivers. hardware drivers window reported no proprietary drivers installed , gave me 3 options: nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 173), (version 96), , (version current). [recommended] listed next (version current) selected current version , clicked on activate. after 1/2 hour of downloading driver installed , notified of need restart system.
when rebooted saw following: blank screen followed largish underscore cursor inch , quarter down top of monitor followed screen normal sized cursor @ top of monitor. ubuntu dots appeared, login prompt flashed by. screen went blank , monitor reported no signal.
there no visual response mouse or keyboard power cycled machine. difference said in preceding paragraph appearance of sony vaio splash screen before largish cursor screen.
rebooted machine ubuntu 10.04 install cd in try out mode , screen appears did before attempted driver installation.
how fix this? do uninstall nvidia driver while booted cd?
if doesn't work , if pull card , restart monitor connected built-in vga video, there way can there?
other suggestions welcome, including whether or not should experiment driver versions 173 and/or 96.
thanks.
after googling found several threads on various forums offered numerous ways fix didn't work them or me. last thing read solution re-install ubuntu.
1 point in favor of did not have card when first installed os. i'm in process of backing , re-install card , re-install os. i'll try upgrading proprietary drivers before doing else.
