Creating shapes from Vector layers (.ai files)

i trying make extrusions image.  new illustrator , have read .ai files ones can extrude in ae.  when bring in .ai file , select create shape vector layer, grey square covers shape.  assuming transparancy issue , filling in size of .ai project.  wrong though.  how can fix this?

you need plain shape in ai. if you're using gradients, masks, clipping paths or other stuff won't work. please give more info , possibly screenshot of ai file.

 

try this. open illustrator. take pen tool , create simple shape closed path. import single layer single path file ae , see if works. if does, show screenshot of ai file , show layers , expand out groups. we'll try , help.
