Thread: Esata Vs USB 3.0 - a quick test -enjoy!
hi all, spent evening setting brother's brand new shiny computer him, , despite being made pretty jealous computer it's replacing better old xp box refuse give on, did opportunity test i've been wondering - how faster usb 3.0 against esata? skip bottom avoid method , waffling!
saw opportunity test whilst setting pc, , didn't plan it, should point out there few flaws in tests did -
firstly drives used weren't new - pair of wd 5000gb 7200 drives have finished 3 year service in raid 1 array primary drives of old pc. forgot check cache size, , whether sata or ii, remember setting raid array 3 years ago seems safe assume sata i.
didn't think check information regarding host computer's hdd. know 128gb ssd split evenly between ubuntu , windows 7 (both 64bit). did check target drive - 3tb wd caviar green, understand (from googling now) 5400 drive, support higher transfer speeds , connected directly motherboard @ sata1.
aside noticing there 12gb of ram, didn't think it's specs - though i'm sure can assume it's ddr3. processor i7, can't testify 4/6 core.
didn't plan share information, , did out of interest, whilst wrote down average speeds, didn't think use benchmark - no high/low or screen shots i'm afraid.
did -
whilst not scientific! think gives real world example. may of interest. plugged old hdds identical caddies (which support both usb 3.0 , esata) , connected these media card/multi port bay on computer (it had multicard slots, esata port, , 2 usb 3.0 ports, , connected pcie on motherboard)
next used gparted format both drives in fat32 (a single partition on each drive after test used external drives connected pci raid card)
tests - picked nice big file - 20.4gb vhd residing on internal wd green drive , copied first external drive via esata. copied back. repeated drive 2 repeated whole process drives connected 1 of usb 3.0 ports.
did staright after restarting ubuntu, no other apps open, nothing disabled, did not disconnect of usb devices connected other (motherboards usb2.0 ports) - mouse, keyboard, printer, third external hdd (not used in tests) may have forgot 1 think that's it.
timed transfers wristwatch - starting when clicked 'paste' , ending when copy window closed (not accurate enough know said, occurred me share info. oh yeah , used phone's calculator work out mb/s (remembering gb 1024mb!)
anyhoo speeds-
internal drive external drive via esata
test 1 - 48.6mb/sec
test 2 - 46.2mb/sec
external drive internal drive via esata
test 1 - 44.2 mb/sec
test 2 - 41.4 mb/sec
internal drive - external drive via usb 3.0
test 1 - 41.0 mb/sec
test 2 - 38.8 mb/sec
external drive internal drive via usb 3.0
test 1 - 36.1 mb/sec
test 2 - 33.5 mb/sec
don't think scientific enough draw conclusions... i'll let draw own.
i have been wondering esata doesn't seem popular. info anyway
