Thread: Playing f4v files

there doesn't seem great deal of information here (or elsewhere on web) playing f4v files in ubuntu.

(the promising search engine result found http://www.linuxtalkforums.com/showt...679&viewfull=1, no longer works , couldn't find mirrors.)

thought start new thread on topic, , things rolling own experience ...

using 10.04 (lucid lynx), ubuntu-restricted-extras, up-to-date. (10.04 long term support release.)

n.b. can play flv files fine, are different.

in file browser, f4v files show being of type 'unknown'. if double click on one, "could not display ... file of unknown type" popup error. popup gives me "select application" button, through can select "movie player". (specifically, "totem movie player 2.30.2" - "movie player using gstreamer 0.10.28")

when open f4v files in movie player, work fine, only thing works text @ bottom tells how long video is. latter case f4v files have saved computer after successfully viewing them on website. given this, wondered why couldn't view f4v files in firefox.

now, this seems suggest play flv files (let alone f4v files) in firefox, might have use "moyea flash video mx pro" - works on microsoft windows.

instead came across firefox extension called "ant video downloader , player", can play both flv files , f4v ones have tried - including ones didn't work in "movie player". time being have been making work copying f4v files "~/downloads/ant videos" directory , then launching ant player.

if wanted continue investigations, next thing try forum's comprehensive multimedia & video howto.

moyea violator of ffmpeg license. 1 of many, if not hundreds, of similar chinese based products abuse licenses of several free tools including ffmpeg , various encoders.

can provide sample of fv4 video not play correctly in movie player?
