Thread: Seeking advice for likely SlashDot effect

greetings,

website of mine may experience large volume of traffic 1 or 2 days. happen in couple weeks, due national advertising/promo.

site gets more traffic search-bots, compared organic requests. may 200-300 requests/day. hosted on modest vps 384mb ram, along email , few other sites less traffic. vps ubuntu 8.04... hah, ubuntu question...lol. site simple html, going paypal payment gateway.

seeking opinions solutions, can prepare. don't think have enough time learn how set amazon ec2 instance (although seems logical step).

don't know if vps provider handle dns requests. i'm thinking i'd have move dns along web server or @ least set backup/secondary dns???

have suggestions short term move this? pay $10/mo, don't think able afford permanent move.

guess need suggest traffic may 2 days. without crystal ball, i'd @ least prepared handle 5-10 thousand visitors in 24 hours... knows, in hour! 1 can dream!

think 2gig or 4gig linode vps reasonable fit. see rackspace cloud server seems less expensive, compared ec2. don't know learning curve , running.

taking time.

hi,

can current vps provider offer? maybe easiest option upgrade current setup 1-2 months downgrade again.

if site static html add more memory (for cacheing, , maybe abit more cpu) if have ssh access server @ amount of memory/cpu site using , decide upgrade.

regards
ian dobson
