Thread: Newbie needs help installing software on 11.10

yesterday went software center , installed 7zip, told me installed not see anywhere when looked it. showed in launcher grey box question mark on when hold mouse on it said 7 zip. tried unzip rar file not work.

today searched online , found program use named winrar ubuntu, them downloaded , there 3 different methods install , none of them work.

last 1 tried.

1. download winrar linux , latest winrar @ www.rarlab.com

2. extract winrarlinux.tar.gz

3. open extracted folder , place wrar*.exe in winrar installers folder

4. run winrar.sh , click install (select setup)

followed these instructions , when did said installed , box click ok came up, said run program.
after clicking ok same box came install , run run greyed out not run program.
kept going around in circles , not show anywhere installed.

leaves me feeling program not going installing stuff if difficult.
have suggestions on installing stuff.

did disk burned after spending day trying brasero yesterday.

sorry long post understand more don't want give on installing stuff has me stumped.

you did right thing 7zip, software centre best place software. you'll find rar/unrar available there well.

on linux pretty our software official repositories through package management apps ubuntu software centre. going random sites , manually downloading install packages windows way of doing it, , you'll realise sucky way handle software is.
