i'm assuming isn't bad set of files, because it's ubuntu.com. however, after did this:

i got 4 or 5 system errors, told me couldn't install flgrx, offered let me submit reports, , end, told me restart computer. did. haven't seen login screen since. screen went purple, didn't show ubuntu logo. blank. flashed between powered off , blank few times, , stuck on glowing black screen. did every time started up.

luckily, able boot original 11.04 cd. unluckily, i'm reckless , foolhardy. personal files in /media/xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx, stop sweating that. there wrong boot directory, obviously. so, go /boot , sort files date modified. @ "initrd.img-2.6.39-020639rc-generic" had been added earlier day. diagnose problem, , this:

first, must shocked allowed that, frack ever. when reboot says "file not found (press key continue_)" key doesn't anything. computer messed up, , lost.

please tell me hell should now. can edit in filesystem, do fix boot-up problem?

working installation cd. not tell me reinstall ununtu, have 122 gbs of personal data, not compromise 1 byte of it!

can grub menu or grub prompt? there may able boot older kernel still resides on ubuntu partition.

if know kernels have , grub menu, can press 'e' edit menuentry , try changing value of kernel version on 'linux' , 'initrd' lines, using cursor arrors navigate entry. ctrl-x boot.

if aren't sure kernels still available, grub prompt typing 'c' grub menu, , type following. substitute x drive number starting 0, , y ubuntu partition, starting 1. (i.e. sda5 hd0,5)
