Unable to create a new menu module in J! 3.6.4 - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

new j! , new desktop linux. learning j! in local installation on old laptop running linux mint 17.3 cinnamon 32-bit 1gb ram. browser mozilla firefox linux mint v49.0.2.

installed j!3.6.2 sample data around 25 oct 2016 , have been poking around in free time. installed jce no apparent errors, yesterday, have not set default editor, yet. today, saw warning notification update j!3.6.4 , did update, morning 10 nov 2016, no apparent errors.

going through richard pearce's "basics" tutorials, afternoon, , decided follow along. able create , edit categories. able create , edit articles. able create , add new menu items existing menu. attempted create new menu module , ran trouble. got far selecting module type "menu," screen cleared, browser tab has spinning circle , says "connecting..." , sits there. no error codes. no timeout, far can tell. entire page area below browser toolbars white, except single gray box control in upper left corner of page area labeled "1. archived articles" dropdown arrow indicator right of label. dropdown control works , lists 21 additional modules total of 22 modules, no other information. rest of page remains white , browser tab continues show spinning circle "connecting..." front end continues function. fpa follows. appreciated. - tom
