How do I turn (back) on font and table selection?

inexplicably, halfway through editing (very important) document, unable make changes fonts or table settings. font, character , paragraph settings greyed. in middle of preparing id6 doc export epub. working table export photoshop graphic. clues appreciated.

i'm not answering own question here. however, i've noted odd lack of editing function applies document. other documents fine. thinking might uninstall , reinstall id, won't work.
