Thread: Ubuntu 10.04 - Problems after installing XP

hello everyone, i’ve been using ubuntu 10.04 little while needed reinstall windows xp. ubuntu disappeared startup , used boot fixer grub , running again. problem ubuntu doesn’t work anymore reason…i have important files on there , if figure out how @ least copy them on usb drive i’d happy.

when choose generic ubuntu brings me loading screen, ubuntu logo , freezes… nothing happens, little progress animation doesn’t appear. first restarted computer , tried run memtest86+. nothing popped up. tried going recovery mode, first off tried repair broken packages, , updated grub bootloader , when restarted computer same error happened. logo appeared froze.

tried using failsafex mode in recovery menu. prompt, “your screen, graphics card, , input device settings not detected correctly. need configure these yourself.” no matter option choose, or path of options follow end black screen. , i’ve resested few times it’s become more uncooperable. it’s getting harder , harder reach recovery menu when choose recovery mode. it’s starting freeze when it’s loading that. (windows still working btw).

there anyway of reparing ubuntu without having clean install it? i.e. preserving files.

how recover files?

also, did manage reach root command in beginning i’m purely gui user had no clue once got logged in. if on off chance there again there guide on how operate ubuntu command line? want first see what’s on desktop, browse through files, locate important files i’ve been looking , transfer them onto usb stick.

well last time had system crash used live cd boot temporary user state kinda thing. there can view files , copy them somewhere else.

have heard if have ubuntu installed first , install windows on dont along. better have windows first put on ubuntu(if plan reinstall)
