Strange vector mask behaviour - rare issue - suddenly, seemingly inverted? - glitch? bug? PEBCAK?

while drag-dropping vector masks on smart objects, came across issue vector mask mask layer contents in incorrect way - specifically, behaved subtractive mask instead of default "combine shapes" mask.

mask-issue.png

in image attached, can see green shape* has layer mask applied, vector mask should producing narrow slit of green. verified thumbnail of said mask, properties of vector shape defines shows "combine shapes" mode (see red arrow).

*(a smart object containing simple green "shape" purposes of visibility. originally, when issue occured, jpeg drag-dropped new smart object layer.)

if manually copy vector mask of green layer red shape layer, replacing red layer's mask, mask of red layer behaves correctly: in situation, fill in green-shape's hole red. if things working should be, both layers identical, , red shape cover green.

something wonky. going on?
