Thread: Problem installing a digital copy of Windows 7 on VirtualBox

so here's interesting one. have account microsoft's msdn academic alliance through school, gives me free copies of microsoft software long downloaded (physical copies cost money) of course i'm trying go poor college student route , not pay. downloaded copies of windows 7 , server 2008 (both 64-bit) run on virtualbox. files i've downloaded saved on computer .exe files , instructions on next msdn gives follows

download selected file must follow these directions:
1. download “delivery client” executable handle actual file download, using "start download” button below. please make sure save file “.exe” file extension in order launch file. if file saved without “.exe” extension , no icon appears, please rename file , add extension “.exe”.
2. launch delivery client
3. delivery client walk through following 4 steps download file:
authorization:*your download must authorized. if not have available downloads, please contact support request additional downloads (see on website).
downloading:*the protected file downloaded local computer.
unpacking:*the file needs unpacked secured.
launch install:*this final step can choose install or, in case of iso file downloads, create disk.
4. download complete. can try download again retrieving delivery client website or launching local computer @ later date.

must install software; if have difficulties please see website further instructions.
launch .exe file , pop reading:

blocked: wine start /unix
file '/home/tossman/downloads/windows_7_with_service_pack_1_debug_checked_build_ 64-bit_(english).exe' not marked executable. if downloaded or copied untrusted source, may dangerous run. more details, read executable bit.

tried renaming .exe file .iso file , mounting on vm boot from, vm gives me fatal error message reading: not read boot medium! system halted.

i'm using ubuntu 11.04, virtualbox 4.1, chrome browser, , system
msi 790gx-g65 am3 amd 790gx hdmi atx amd motherboard
msi r5670 cyclone 1g radeon hd 5670
amd phenom ii x6 1090t black edition thuban 3.2ghz socket am3
4x g.skill ripjaws series 4gb 240-pin ddr3 sdram ddr3 1066 (pc3 8500)
3x western digital caviar black 750gb 7200 rpm sata 3.0gb/s 3.5" hard drive -bare drive

still pretty new linux , tech support whole if easy fix sorry being newb.

one can try right click on .exe file on ubuntu , select:

open archive manager

many .exe archives can opened in ubuntu way. if opens extract .iso file.
