Thread: Get back classic Desktop of 11.04 on 11.10

some of might want old classic back. not 100% in 11.04 classic these settings of them back.

in article configure ubuntu 11.10 class window back. have main menu instead of menubar.
1. install gnome-panel

$ sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

2. login "gnome classic" login screen

3. delete bottom panel
use alt + right click , delete it.

4. bring top panel bottom
use alt + right click, go properties , set orientation bottom. change size 22. select properties -> background make opaque , choose color value #3f3e39. did not color around notification icons , date, when tried use panel image background, color choice better option.

5. icons.
using alt + right click delete unnecessary icons. 1 causes panel big use menu (so don't use it). main menu, show desktop, logout, shutdown, notification area , clock. using application launcher terminal, firefox. using custom application launcher create launcher home directory (command nautilus /home/yourusername, give icon using /usr/share/icons/ubuntu-mono-dark/places/48/folder-home.svg).

6. delete global menu
$ sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt

global menu (if choose use unity change)
sudo apt-get install appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt

note: keep these scripts handy. or ease create script , execute them whenever needed.

7. align window button right

$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout \
--type string "menu:minimize,maximize,close"

note: if don't menu can use ":minimize,maximize,close"

8. adding compiz fun back.
there nuisance though. if start compiz not able add icons panel unless disable again. go other-> startup applications , add entry. give name want, in command put "compiz --replace" without quotes. next start compizconfig settings manager (ccsm) , disable unity. go window management , check if application switcher, grid, move window, place windows, resize windows, scale checked. change others prefer. when logout , login have compiz working. if want add icons panel can disable compiz startup applications logout , login add icons , re-enable after done.

if goes wrong , not log out. command reset be

$ sudo service lightdm restart

9. conclusion
thats all. if there other things can improved please include.
