Thread: Ubuntu-based Kiosk System?

i looking advice on how go building secure system public setting.

here's i'm looking for, in nutshell:

  • a "guest" account user may login without needing password.
  • the ability restrict aspects of user. no access filesystem outside own "/home" directory, no ability make changes system itself, etc.
  • after period of inactivity, user automatically logged out , entire "/home" directory reset exact state in before logged in...essentially wiping out changes may have made, including browser history, files copied, etc.

basically, used within public setting guests need have full access internet , ability edit , print office documents personal usb drives. nothing more, nothing less.

i've looked @ webconverger (way limited) , xpud (again, limited).

there way install ubuntu , create limited guest account , handle rest of need scripts?

or signs in right direction highly appreciated!

i suppose little info on may help.

work in hotel has small business center (2 pcs) running windows 7. right has demo version of limited "kiosk" program.

move both of pcs free system running linux. our guests need able have access internet , able edit , print ms office documents, pdf files , else on internet.

however, since there privacy , security concerns, need wipe out traces of activity when finished , ready next guest.

if end playing around simple customization options (changing wallpaper, etc), that's fine; need go default setting when they're finished.
