Thread: SATA3 vs SATA2 for home file server build?

hello all.
not strictly ubuntu question since active here thought receive advice. also, wasn't sure whether post in server, hardware or networking sections, hope i'm on right place.

preparing build myself ubuntu home file server. nothing fancy, mini-itx board built-in dual core atom d525, 2gb ddr3 , 2 hdds in software raid1.

comes dilemma. since sata3 disks more common on market now, , seems cheaper sata2, samsung f3 sata3 disks instead of sata2 planning. board has sata2 ports (4 of them). worth spending more board sata3, or sata3 adapter?

if understand right, mechanical disks can not fill out sata2 bandwidth, let alone sata3. so, spending , planning sata3 waste of time , money? there real life improvement?

if matters, server in wired 1gb network.
also, if need more info, board planning gigabyte d525t-ud.

in advance advice.
darko.

here consider:

1gb/s network interface bottleneck. here why. 1gb/s interface transmits data @ 100mb/s after overhead.

sata disks performance not great (in comparison technologies ssd) , depending on workload file storage, 2 sata disks may saturate gigabit interface in purely sequential i/o situation, if in random i/o situation (accessing many files @ once) storage slow down considerably.

in nutshell, not think makes difference setup. sata3 may more mainstream , cheaper sata2.

may want speed purchase. western digital's plants flooded , hard drive shortage expected...at least according slashdot.
